Eco-Friendly Wedding Favors for Your Green Wedding

These days, it seems that everyone’s favorite color is green. Eco-friendly is the new black this season. Many couples choose to build their wedding in regards to an eco-friendly wedding guideline. From eco-friendly wedding invitations to eco-friendly wedding favors, there is a rapidly growing industry that caters to those who want to be kinder to the world they live in.

What is Eco-Friendly?

Progressively, we have moved long past the day when we just acknowledged words associating with “recycled.” Today’s eco-friendly products take their responsibility to the world far deeper than merely printing their brochures or invitations on recycled paper. To be eco-friendly is to participate with the goods and services considered to inflict minimal or no harm on our environment. One maker of a very popular line of eco-friendly wedding invitations, for instance, uses one hundred percent certified post-consumer recycled paper, soy-based inks and a printing process powered entirely by wind-energy, so that no resources are used to add to the carbon footprint of your wedding day.

Eco-Friendly Wedding Favors

If you are determined to have an eco-friendly wedding, there are multiple ways you’re your wedding can be green from start to finish. You can even choose to send your guests home with wedding favors that help them to continue eco-friendly behavior well after your wedding is over. Below are some things to look for in an eco-friendly wedding favor, invitation and other wedding accessories.

If you are an eco-friendly person, you probably already know that you should not have your guests throw rice at your wedding because it is not healthy for the birds. Confetti is not much better because it has harmful dyes that can be detrimental to the environment. Wildflower seeds may seem like a good idea on the surface, but may not be appreciated by neighbors or the venue at which your ceremony is held. Instead, have your guests throw freeze-dried rose petals. These are all natural, biodegradable, and noting says romance quite like roses. You can also be eco-friendly by giving wedding favors that live on long past your wedding day. One of the most novel developments in wedding favors is what is known as “plant-able” paper. Created by using recycled rag and paper that is impregnated with wildflower seeds, this paper can be formed into hearts, doves, cones and even wedding invitations. Once the wedding is over, your guests can take their favor home and plant it in the ground. They can remember your wedding fondly as they grow a patch of wildflowers in their own yards. Other popular eco-friendly wedding favors include a little clay pot packaged with an ornament such as a dove, a cross, a heart or another wedding-themed motif. They are beautiful table decorations at your wedding, then they can go home with your guests to be planted in a half inch of soil so that they may bloom. If you decide to give candy favors to your guests, there are organic chocolates available with minimal packaging which will reduce the amount of waste that your wedding will generate. These chocolates are not only friendly to the environment, but they also taste great!

Other Tips for Making Your Wedding a Green Wedding

If you want a completely eco-friendly wedding, do not stop with the eco-friendly wedding favors. There are many other ways to make your wedding greener. Below are just a few tips for making your wedding a green and Earth-friendly.

Choose to serve an organic, vegetarian or vegan menu to your guests. Try to not use disposable serving ware or dinnerware at your wedding. The water saved by not washing the dishes does not offset the resources used in making disposable plates and dinnerware. Choose invitations printed on recycled, unbleached paper, or ones printed with non-petroleum based inks. You can find a number of beautiful eco-friendly wedding invitations online. Serve organic coffee at your wedding and all of your wedding events such as rehearsal dinner, engagement party and any others. Choose a wedding gown that is eco-friendly. You can either re-use your mother’s wedding gown, or buy one that is second-hand. You can also repurpose a gown that was bought at a vintage shop. Avoid clothing that needs to be dry-cleaned such as rental tuxes. Choose flowers that are grown locally to cut down on the carbon footprint of transporting the flowers cross-country or over the ocean. While you are thinking flowers, think about choosing live centerpieces that can go home with your guests and be replanted. Small trees are an ideal choice because they will grow up to help reduce the carbon emissions in the atmosphere and continue doing good things for our earth for decades. If possible, hold your wedding outdoors and use as little electricity as possible. An afternoon outdoor wedding is beautiful, romantic and uses very little in the way of generated energy. You will have the advantage of natural light and the beauty of the Earth as your backdrop.

Ask your photographer to use digital media and provide digital proofs of your wedding photographs. That will cut down on the amount of chemicals used in developing your photographs and the use of paper photos.

Wedding Solutions’ Favorite Ways to Save Money on Your Wedding

Many couple’s top concern when planning their wedding is how to save money while still have a beautiful, memorable day. Here are Wedding Solutions’ top tips for having an amazing wedding day, without breaking the bank.

First of all, identify what is important to you. Especially if price is a concern, you have to prioritize. Is the dress the most important item for you? Is it the flowers? A specific photographer? If you have to have a particular item or vendor, you need to identify this right away.

Second, make sure whomever you hire as your wedding vendors connect with you, no matter what price you are paying. Hire someone you trust and who makes you laugh and relax, who puts you at ease. If you don’t connect with your vendors, don’t hire them because YOU can’t be uptight on your big day.

Third, make sure the vendors you connect with are the ones who will be actually handling your event. (Have specific name(s) listed in the contract.)

Fourth, although vendors generally get booked at 9 months out, if you can wait, most vendors are more willing to negotiate closer to the wedding day. While we don’t recommend waiting until the last minute, the closer you are to your wedding date, the higher your chance of being able to negotiate with the vendor.

There are a few specific places in the wedding-planning process where you can save money.  Here are Wedding Solutions’ favorite picks for money-saving tips:

5. Whether 9 months out or 3 months out, negotiate for a better deal: The following are just some of the ways you can work with vendors to make sure you are getting the most for your wedding dollar. Either more time, or a percentage discount or a free engagement portrait, etc.

–Percentage Discount -

example: If I hire you for the wedding and reception, can I get a 10% discount?

–Free Sitting Included with Package -

example: If I hire you to photograph the wedding and reception, would you throw in a free engagement sitting?

–Free Photo Album

example: If I hire you to shoot my wedding and reception will you include a free photo album with the package. (Be sure to get at least 20 pictures included.)

Another option is to hire a professional for 2 hours, then hire a less expensive photographer for less-important shots, or ask your friends to email you the best of the pictures they took on their digital cameras.

The point is, always ask, “How can we work together to make this happen?”

4. Choose the right day. If want to save money, Friday and Sunday mornings are the best days to get married. Even consider Sunday brunch. Saturday is the most popular day – and thus, the worst day – to get married. A Sunday brunch is a great idea and will definitely save you money, both on the location and the food and bar tab. People eat and drink less during the day than at night.

3. Refreshments: Offer only beer and wine, or have an open bar for just an hour, offer only then beer and when. Save money by serving champagne only for the toast. Place buckets filled with water bottles about the reception area. People will want a drink, and many will be happy with the water rather than taking time to go to the bar.

2. Flowers:

One of the easiest ways to save money is by choosing flowers that are locally grown and in-season. Skipping the exotic options can cut costs by 1/3.  Expensive and fragile blooms include stephanotis, orchids, and gardenias. A less expensive option might include Gerber daisies. They’re hardy and available year round. Carnations are also very inexpensive, come in many colors, and are available year round.

Another tip for saving money is to use greenery or ivy in your trellis and bouquet. Greenery is substantially cheaper than cut flowers.

1. Attire: Dress and Tuxedo

The Tuxedo: Generally, the groom’s tux is free if groom’s men rent tux from store. Always ask for a free tux.

The Dress:

-If you’re planning far enough out from wedding, pick stores you like with great selections and call to find out when their sales are.

- Ask for free veil if buy a gown.

-If the dress isn’t the most important part to you, you can rent an inexpensive gown, or you might get a secondhand dress. Secondhand stores or eBay have a big selection. Have the dress tailored to fit your body.

-J. Crew is another great option; they offer a new line of wedding and bridesmaids gowns, many under $300. Another inexpensive option you might not have considered – Target.com has a line of wedding dresses, all about $100.

A final thought on flowers: It will cost much, much more to get your dress tailored at a bridal store. Find a small tailor and save big bucks.

Lastly, while it’s not thought of as money-saving technique, hiring a good wedding planner can save you money. Wedding planners have special relationships with vendors and can get you great deals. Planner can also save you stress, put on fires on your wedding day, and generally give you peace of mind. You can hire them for a day, for 10 hours, or for the whole event. They can negotiate contracts, keep you on task, and help you know what to ask when speaking to vendors.

And finally, two places not to try and save money in wedding planning: your photographer, and your DJ or band. When it comes to photos, never ask a friend or hire an amateur. People seldom remember what flowers are at the wedding, but the pictures last forever. You want to hire a professional who will do a great job. And the DJ or band is what keeps the party lively after the reception. Guests will remember dancing and having a great time. Never skimp on the musical entertainment.

Happy wedding planning from Wedding Solutions!

Things the Maid of Honor and Best Man Should Do

As maid of honor, you have a special role and place in the wedding.  You will insure that the bridesmaids are doing what they should and you set the tone for them.  You also should insure that the wedding fits the bride’s plans.

Here are some of the tasks that proper wedding etiquette says that the maid of honor should perform.

-    Wedding invitations.  The maid of honor should help to address and send the invitations as well as any announcements.

-    Host the shower.  The maid of honor should throw a party in honor of the couple.  This may be the bridal shower.  They should work with others in the family for planning and executing this very important event.

-    Attend all parties and other pre nuptial events.

-    Help the bride throughout the ceremony including help with her train, the receiving line, holding the bride’s bouquet during the ceremony, witness the ceremony and sign the marriage certificate, and to carry the groom’s ring until needed, unless best man does this.

-    Help the bride to dress.  Assist in her dressing as well as with the other bridesmaids.  Help her to undress after the wedding.

-    Assist the flower girl with directions and insure she performs her role effectively.

-    Help the bride to leave the reception and to have her luggage packed for going away plans.

-    Have her wedding dress taken care of including cleaning and preserving as per the wishes of the bride.

Best Man

The best man plays a large role in the wedding as well.  Here are some of his responsibilities.

-    Provide for the marriage license.  He needs to make sure the groom has it!

-    Provide the minister’s fee to the minister.  The groom should give it to him.

-    Travel arrangements.  The best man should provide for travel arrangements to each destination.  He should also provide all the necessary help for planning a honeymoon too.

-    Gets the groom to the church.

-    Helps the groom to dress for the wedding.  He should also help the ring bearer and other groomsmen do the same.  The best man should help to insure the ring bearer is taken care of.

-    Organize and monitor groomsmen.  Insure they are where they are supposed to be on time.

-    Provide for any errands that need to be done.  The best man should coordinate with the bride’s mother and the couple to make sure that they have all that is needed.

-    Makes the first toast at the wedding reception.  He should also be the first to arrive at the reception and greets guests and the bride and groom when they arrive.

-    Acts as a host throughout the day, helping anyone that needs it.

-    Helps the groom and bride to leave with the maid of honor’s help.

-    The best man should also take the tux for himself and the groom back to the rental location.  He should take care of the cleaners if the tux is to stay with the groom.

-    Has flowers delivered for the bride and the groom on their honeymoon.

-    He also signs the marriage certificate as a witness.
